    It's just carpet, right? ...Right?!

Like so many products, there is an INCREDIBLE amount of information available about carpet. Like a RIDICULOUS amount. There is also a great deal of misinformation out there. There are carpet myths. There are even carpet legends. We could write a book, but we won’t. You don’t need to be an expert. You DO need to be informed. So we’ll share information that will help you make the best decision in picking the perfect carpet to meet your needs and your budget. Some of the information shared here is from the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI), THE source for educational and unbiased information about carpets. Some information is from the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) as well as other independent trade associations. We’ll also be chiming in based on our years of experience in the industry. So, let's talk carpet.

The four most important pieces of information:

    1. Fiber

Why should you care about carpet fibers? Because you’ll want to select a fiber that offers the durability, stain resistance and ease of cleaning that will best meet your needs.

The primary fibers used in carpet are synthetic (as opposed to natural fibers, like wool). These include nylon, polyester, triexta and olefin. Each one offers different benefits. Ready?

Nylon: Looking for a carpet that will last the longest and prevent wear and traffic patterns? If you’ve got an active household and no plans to move, Nylon is the best choice for you.   A fiber developed by Dupont in the 1930s as an alternative to silk. Nylon is engineered to be very durable, stand up the best to foot traffic and offer stain resistance. Nylon isn’t the least expensive fiber, but we believe it’s a great choice if you plan to be in your home for many years.

Polyester: Need a good stain resistant carpet? Perhaps you’re moving in the next 3-6 years. You’d like a durable carpet, but it doesn’t have to last forever. Polyester carpet is a solid combination of stain resistance, wear prevention and price. This fiber offers built-in moisture and stain resistance and is generally soft to the touch. A portion of the polyester fiber itself is made from recycled PET products, such as soda bottles. Polyester is more durable than olefin and typically less expensive than nylon.

Triexta – The newest fiber type. Think polyester.

Olefin: Good for stain prevention but not long-lasting. According to WFCA, “Olefin is colorfast, prevents moisture damage, is stain resistant, and is low in static. But it’s not as durable as wool or nylon and should not be installed in heavy usage locations.”

    2. Types of carpet

Carpet is made in different ways, creating different styles. Some lend themselves better to certain lifestyles, decorative preferences and budgets, so it’s a great place to start when considering how you plan to use your new carpet.

Cut Pile: The durability of this popular style varies with the type of fiber used, the density of yarn tufts and the number of twists in the yarn. Yarn with more twists holds its shape better, making it ideal for high traffic areas.

Loop Pile: Think Berber. Created of loops that are all the same height, loop pile works well in high traffic areas yet complements a variety of design options, from casual to sophisticated. The multi-colored styles are good for basements and playrooms. The solid-colored styles are great for a more formal look in places such as dining rooms or living rooms. Try styles Vintage or Sprinkles.

Cut-Loop Pile: This style combines – ready for it? – both cut AND looped yarns used to create a wide variety of patterns and textures. This, in turn, provides a lot of style and character for settings from contemporary to traditional. Perfect for pretty much any room in your home. Try styles Gem or Stream

    3. Installation

The way your carpet is installed is critical, which is why we have the best installation team around. Our teams receive ongoing training on new tools and techniques. Additionally, we screen and perform background checks on ALL of our staff so you can have confidence and peace of mind when it comes to who will be coming to your home.

Our Lifetime Installation Guarantee means that we guarantee our installations for as long as you live in your house. Period. Forget about 1 year or 5 year guarantees. We use highly skilled technicians to install your carpet, and that means we are 100% confident standing behind our work.

    4. Padding

The primary purpose of padding is to support the carpet and to prevent wear. The padding shouldn’t be too soft OR too thick. Padding has traditionally been used to convince people to spend more money. That’s not how we work.

We won’t overwhelm you with choices or charge you more to upgrade. You can rest easy knowing that you are getting an excellent, quality padding included in the overall price of your carpet, one that is guaranteed for the life of your home.

Just like cooking, we believe that better ingredients lead to better results. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

    • Textured Plush: Very versatile, the varied textures make it a great choice for high traffic areas thanks to its ability to hide footprints and vacuum marks. Works great in any bedroom, living room or dining room. Try style Obsessed.
    • Saxony: The refined surface offers a classic look that is great for a living room or master bedroom. Try style Staying Classy.
    • Frieze: Think shag…. a casual look. The textured surface is the result of highly twisted yarn and is excellent at hiding both footprints and vacuum marks. It is typically multi-colored and has a more informal look perfect for a family room or basement. Try styles Scrumptious or Adaptable
    • Plush: Also called velvet, this luxurious construction shows footprints and vacuum marks easily, which makes it best for low traffic areas, such as bedrooms.

Loop Pile: Think Berber. Created of loops that are all the same height, loop pile works well in high traffic areas yet complements a variety of design options, from casual to sophisticated.
